On a shoot, makeup is one more line on the call sheet. It has to be ready at call time, stand up to studio lights and heat, and look identical in take 3 and take 27. That’s my job as an on-set makeup artist.
What I do on set
Beauty and character makeup
Natural camera-ready makeup, character looks, skin that doesn’t shine under the lights. Matched to the actor’s tone, the lighting and the format: a tight shot in 4K isn’t the same as a wide in a music video.
Character and effects
Ageing, wounds, dirt. Sweat and blood that stay put. If the script calls for prosthetics, I make them before the shoot. Details on SFX and prosthetic makeup. For full characters, period or fantasy, see character makeup.
Continuity
A photo of each character when they’re done, a continuity log and touch-ups between takes. On series and multi-day shoots, it’s what saves you from reshooting a scene.

How do I hire a makeup artist for a shoot?
By the day or half day. I need the call time, the expected wrap, the number of people to make up and the type of makeup. With that I send you the day rate; overtime is quoted separately.
What's in your on-set kit?
Foundations and concealers for every skin tone. Mattifiers and setting products for studio lights. Basic character makeup with blood and quick wounds, light hair products and everything needed for removal. If the project needs prosthetics, those are made in advance.
Do you keep continuity?
Yes. I photograph each character when they're done and log the changes per scene. If you're shooting out of sequence or over several days, continuity (raccord) is documented.
How many people can you make up on a shoot?
It depends on the makeup. Camera-ready beauty takes a few minutes per person; a character look takes a lot longer. Give me the headcount and the call time and I'll tell you whether I can do it alone or a second makeup artist makes sense.
Do you do hair as well?
Light hair: styling, touch-ups and hold through the day. For elaborate hairstyles or look changes I coordinate with a hairstylist.
